NEWARK, NJ -The Newark Public Library seeks a compassionate, experienced full-time social worker to serve a diverse population at its Main Library and seven branches throughout the City. The social worker will: • Connect with library visitors who may benefit from referral to and follow-up with social services providers and/or counseling by the Library’s social worker • In consultation with the patron, identify needs (such as housing, hunger, mental health, substance abuse, domestic and other violence) and find means of addressing them • Provide short-term case management for patrons for whom it would improve their lives • Offer group therapy (such as for older adults, LGBTQ clients, veterans, ex-offenders) • Collaborate with Library staff to help clients (for example, updating community services guides for social services and for special populations) • Engage in discussion and actions with community organizations and agencies to reduce/eliminate social problems and to strengthen the City • Educate staff in communicating with our neediest neighbors • Work with student interns at the Library (such as from the Rutgers School of Social Work) • Report monthly data and stories about the outcomes of social work efforts in the Library and in its partnerships • Plan programs with other Library staff and with outside agencies and organizations (such as those introducing people affected by homelessness to services providers) • Promote the Newark Public Library’s services by presenting programs to community groups, other libraries, and the media • Advance the Library’s Strategic Plan The Newark Public Library is New Jersey’s largest municipal library, providing collections and services at the Main Library and seven branch libraries located in neighborhoods throughout the city. The Library is a gateway to knowledge and lifelong learning: nurturing youth and families, contributing to the personal growth and well-being of all Newarkers, strengthening digital literacy skills for all, enhancing and promoting the Library’s special collections, and providing welcoming environments.
