As single parent homes become more prevalent, the idealization of the traditional family structure must also change. Over half of society's African-American youth are being raised by one parent, namely the mother, and yet society tends to ignore the positive aspects of being raised by a single mother. This workshop will introduce a framework for a culturally sensitive counseling model that uses the Resilience Theory and a strength perspective in order to better understand single mothers and their family structure.
