A Special Message from NASW-NJ Executive Director Walter Kalman

NASW Responds to Death of Freddie Gray, Police Reforms

National Association of Social Workers (NASW) chapters and officials are reacting to the death of Freddie Gray while in custody of Baltimore City police, the resulting civil unrest, and the charges filed against six police officers in connection with Gray’s death.

NASW-NYC has written “Statement in Response to the Baltimore Uprising and the Need to Unite the Social Work Profession in Addressing the Tragedies Occurring Throughout the Country” which is particularly powerful message. It begins:

“The leadership of the National Association of Social Workers, New York City Chapter, including its Committee on Race, Diversity and Intersectionality, its Committee of Social Workers Against Criminalization, and its Task Force of Social Workers of African Descent stand in solidarity with the people of Baltimore and protesters nationally who are demanding structural change within the culture of policing.”

Please click here to read the full statements by NASW-NYC, NASW-MD, NASW Past President Gary Bailey and others. NASW-NJ strongly supports these messages and encourages professional Social Workers to work together, as agents of change, toward our ultimate goal of social and economic justice.

Do You Practice Self-Care?

Many social workers enter the profession because they have a desire to help others in need and contribute to the betterment of society. As Social Workers we must remember that no matter what, we must stop and take time for ourselves.

MSW Students: Steps to Obtain Your Social Work License!

As graduation approaches, many students want to know the quickest way to get their Social Work Licenses (LSW).

NASW-NJ has developed a detailed checklist of the steps you must take to get an LSW in New Jersey. The checklist has been reviewed and approved by the NJ Board of Social Work Examiners (BSWE/Licensing Board). We provide this checklist so that you will not need to contact the BSWE to complete your application.

students graduating

CLICK HERE or go to our website (www.naswnj.org) under Licensing for a link to the checklist. Please follow these steps, in order, for the smoothest path to licensure.

Remember: You can now take the exam (ASWB Master’s exam) any time after you have registered for the final semester of your MSW program. You will need to provide documentation to the BSWE from the institution where you are enrolled for the last semester of your MSW program.
