NASW-NJ LEGISLATIVE AGENDA:
Immigrants and Refugees
Working toward fair and just immigration and refugee policies is important to the profession of social work and essential to the realization of human rights. Social workers recognize migration as a complex social, cultural, and political process, and promote a fair, equitable, and comprehensive plan for those in need, regardless of their immigration status, that ensures they are provided health, education, and social services.
- Advocate for comprehensive immigration reform at the Federal level that protects human rights, provides a path to citizenship and addressed the root causes of migration.
- Reform the immigrant detention system which treats vulnerable immigrant detainees as criminals. Alternatives to detention should be expanded and a system built that ensures due process protections, honors human dignity and minimizes the use of for profit detention centers.
- Expand access to adult education (ESL), housing, health care, workers’ wages and driver’s licenses in NJ and support related legislation.
