7:30 - 9:00 PM Screening of ALIVE INSIDE & Presentation by Dan Cohen, MSW
(1.5 Non-Clinical CEUs)
Alive Inside follows Dan Cohen, a social worker who decides to bring iPods to a nursing home visit. What Cohen discovers by accident, and scientists have been studying for years, is how a person suffering from memory loss can "awaken" when given music to which they have an emotional attachment. As Oliver Sacks explains in the film, "Music imprints itself onthe brain deeper than any other human experience. Music evokes emotion and emotion can bring with it memory."
The film is witeness to this reawakening of "lost" residents in nursing homes. The effect on the individual and their caregivers is both touching and inspiring. The introduction of personalized music into residents' lives open new vistas of experience, especially for those with the least ability to interact. The aim of this film is to encourage widespread adoption of personalized music at home and for those in care facilities. The reward can be enormous and the cost is low.
As founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit, Music & Memory (www.musicandmemory.org), this approach has been featured by NPR, CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, and The New York Times. Dan Cohen will share how to use this approach to generate improvements in mood and behavior, which, in turn, may reduce or eliminate the need for anti-psychotic, anti-depression, and/or anti-anxiety medications.
