One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a BSW or MSW student for the 2015-2016 academic year. The student must be an NASW member and have applied to or have been accepted into an accredited BSW or MSW program. Payment of the award will be contingent on the admission of the candidate to the program, and a check will be written by NASW to the school that the awardee attends.
The Harriet Bloomfield Memorial Scholarship Fund is dedicated to the memory of Harriet Bloomfield. Harriet was a charter member of NASW and served the New Jersey Chapter in a variety of positions. She was first vice-president, chair of the PACE committee, a delegate to Delegate Assembly and a member of the annual Conference Committee. In 1989, she was honored as the NASW-NJ Social Worker of the Year.
Scholarship applications and essays must be received by the NASW-NJ office no later than February 28, 2015. The scholarship will be awarded at the NASW-NJ Annual Conference May 3-5, 2015 at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa, Atlantic City, NJ. The scholarship winner must be available for an interview, and the winning essay may be published in the NASW-NJ FOCUS newsletter.
The applicant must be a NASW New Jersey Chapter member in good standing. Please enclose a copy of your current NASW membership card. Awardee must remain a member in good standing throughout the award period. If candidate is not yet eligible for membership, but will be by the time the scholarship is awarded, please note this on the application. Biographical essay (two typed, double-spaced pages). Essay must address career goals and interests as well as work, volunteer and school/field experience.
Two letters of support from professional references. Letters must be included with the application and can be written by a candidate's professors; individuals or leaders of groups with whom the candidate has worked in a helping capacity; an employer/supervisor; or other person with knowledge of the applicant's experience in the field of social work/social service.
Copy of a transcript from the most recent academic program (undergraduate or graduate). Copy of previous semester's grades would also be accepted.
If the applicant is not currently enrolled in an accredited BSW or MSW program, provide the letter of acceptance from the program, or a copy of the application to an accredited BSW or MSW program, along with a letter from the college/university verifying the application has been received.
