3-Day Clinical Supervision Course
Presenter: Patricia O’Dell, LCSW
The always popular Clinical Supervision Course will be offered
at this year’s Annual Conference, so make sure to sign up early!
Participants must register for the full conference and attend ALL sessions of this course. Please note that those in the Clinical Supervision Course will not be able to attend keynote sessions and should not select any additional workshops. To register, only check the Clinical Supervision Box on the registration form.
Fundamentals of Clinical Supervision – Day One
This workshop will provide a brief overview of the history of supervision and will identify its role in meeting the current demands of the practice environment. The information supplied will be based on sound practice principles and will offer a comprehensive framework for understanding the administrative, educational and supportive functions of supervision. Discussions will include the supervisory tasks of staff recruitment and retention, the management of workloads, task delegation, and worker performance, as well as the roles and responsibilities inherent in educational and supportive supervision. Two models of supervisory practice will be identified to include the Developmental Model and the Interactional Model. Specific phases in the development of the supervisor-supervisee relationship, learning patterns and styles, the parallel process, as well as leadership styles will be identified and explored. Conflicts arising in supervision will be discussed and a framework for their resolution will be provided. Supervisory skills and techniques will be highlighted throughout.
Legal and Ethical Issues in Clinical Supervision – Day Two
During this presentation, the laws and regulations of the NJ State Board of Social Work Examiners will be used to identify and review the legal mandates that guide, support and direct supervisory practice in New Jersey. Attention will be directed to an exploration of supervisory liability and how supervisors and their supervisees can avoid malpractice lawsuits and charges of professional misconduct. In addition, the NASW Code of Ethics will be discussed with a focus on conflicts of interest, which are amongst our professions most challenging concerns. Boundary crossings vs. boundary violations will be explored, and participants will be provided with a legal and ethical decision making tool. Best practice principles will be identified throughout.
Cultural Competency in Clinical Supervision – Day Three
Using both experiential and theoretical approaches, broad themes of cultural competence will be covered as they relate to race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, physical and mental ability and social class. Through the use of small and large group exercises, participants will begin to recognize the assumptions, attitudes, biases and misconceptions that inhibit communication about cultural differences within the supervisory relationship. Factors that facilitate cultural awareness and competence, and a framework for their inclusion in supervision, will be provided.

The conference allows for 19 hours of in-class instruction. Prior to the Conference, registrants will be e-mailed an assignment to complete and bring with them in order to meet the required 20 hours of instruction. This course meets the NJ Board of Social Work Examiners’ 20 continuing education credits related to supervision, and also includes 5 Ethics credits and 3 Social and Cultural Competence credits. ■ ● ♦
This is our first time offering the entire NASW-NJ Leadership Development Certificate Program at the Annual Conference and we hope that you will embrace the leader within you and join us! We recognize that all of you are inspirations to your clients, supervisees and colleagues. We want to give you the extra tools you need to be a solid leader. This program is relevant for seasoned social workers who are looking to hone their skills and for emerging social work professionals who are preparing for leadership roles.
