2015 Conference: Special Events
SUNDAY AFTERNOON - MAY 3, 2015
GIVE BACK TO AC!
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
A commitment to serving and standing up for those who are oppressed or vulnerable is what makes social workers so extraordinary.
For the first time at the Annual Conference, NASW-NJ is joining forces with a local Atlantic City organization so that we can give back to the community that hosts us each year! Atlantic City still needs your help—and it’s a great opportunity to join fellow social workers for an afternoon of service.
Details of the project have not yet been finalized, but we are looking at a few options including cleaning up a beach or local park, packaging items at the food bank, and more. If you’d like to participate, please mark off Volunteer Project when registering for the Conference and we will be in touch with you directly with project details.
All volunteers at this event will receive a $40 voucher to be used at a future NASW-NJ CE Program or Annual Conference. Transportation to and from the Borgata for this event will be provided.
SUNDAY EVENING - MAY 3, 2015
FILM & CE with Dessert Reception
Food Deserts and Food Insecurities: A Call to Action for Social Workers
Presenter: Guia Calicdan-Apostle, DSW, MSSW
(1.5 Non-Clinical CEUs)
7:15 PM – 8:45 PM
We officially welcome you to the Conference with a cupcake reception and special Film & CE program!
Guia Calicdan-Apostle will be screening a clip from the Virginia State University documentary film entitled Living in a Food Desert, then leading a discussion of the content and contexts of food deserts and food insecurity within the ecological perspective. We will explore the meaning and impact of food insecurity and food deserts in New Jersey and the role that social workers can take in addressing this in our communities.

We hope to be purchasing tickets to the Borgata Comedy Club for those who wish to have a night out. Once you have registered for the Conference, we will email you with any updates on this opportunity, since reduced price tickets for our conference attendees will be first-come, first-serve.
