Social Worker of the Year
Barbara Milton, PhD, LCSW
For 35 years, Barbara Milton, PhD, LCSW has demonstrated her commitment to and tireless advocacy for disadvantaged children, families, and communities. Through her direct service, leadership, writing, and media outreach, she pursues social justice for her community, clients, staff, and students.
Dr. Milton serves as Director of Clinical Services for The Family Center of the Urban League of Hudson County in Jersey City. Prior to that she was the Clinical Supervisor and Trainer-Field Instructor at the Family Resource Center & Westside Children’s Counseling Center of the Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Newark. She also founded and serves as the CEO of Social Work Practice for Resilience, LLC inHudson County, NJ.
Beyond her extensive social work involvement in Jersey City, Dr. Milton writes a column, “Our Pride and Joy,” for the Jersey Journal, which features stories about Hudson County teenagers. She also produces and hosts the Comcast public access television program called “Focus on Teens,” which considers the lives of at-risk youth, their families, and their community. She is currently writing/editing an anthology of her “Our Pride and Joy” columns and working on a book manuscript — on protective factors and resilience — which will be based on her research with African American slave narratives.
Dr. Milton is the recipient of a CUNY Graduate Research Grant; a CUNY Social Welfare Fellowship; the UMDNJ-UBHC Master Clinician Award, the Hudson Pride Community Advocate Award, and Rutgers University’s Mark Foreman Excellence in Social Work award.
She also co-chairs the NASW-NJ Hudson Unit and serves on the Chapter’s Continuing Education Program Committee. She is deeply committed to the social work profession and to developing the next generation of professional social workers.
