Title:  Clinical Intervention with Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease and their Family Caregivers:  The Important Role of Social Work


EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
By end of this presentation participants will be provided:
• A brief overview of Alzheimer Disease and related dementias, including prevalence, stages of illness and symptomatology, and treatment options.
• Discussion of the psycho social impact of dementia upon both the individual and family, including impact upon marriage, family and interpersonal relationships, psychological issues and needs for both dementia caregiver and care receiver, and social isolation issues.
• Discussion of cultural dimensions of the experience of dementia.
• Review of the array of medical and community resources key to enhancing well-being for individual and family, including the cultural dimensions of health literacy
• Discussion of the pivotal role of the social worker in fostering identification and quality assessment, care planning and ongoing support for dementia clients and caregivers, including establishing support groups, counseling issues to consider and outreach to under served populations.
