NASW-NJ Mentoring Program
Purpose and Mission

The NASW-NJ Mentor Program was formed to facilitate connections between senior members of the profession and newer social workers. Mentoring can include interpersonal support, guidance, sharing of wisdom and information, coaching, and role-modeling. It is a professional relationship intended to foster discussion about social work related issues and the profession. Mentorship is a purposeful, conscious, voluntary relationship. Mentor relationships and interactions are not meant to provide case supervision or psychotherapy. The frequency of the meeting and time limit is determined by the two partners in the mentoring relationship. Mentoring occurs between an experienced, NASW-NJ social worker and a recent graduate, a social worker re-entering the field, or a social worker who is changing their field of practice. Mentoring is open to NASW-NJ members only.

Mentors
Mentors are NASW members in good standing, maintain a license to practice social work in New Jersey, have more than five years of practice, have demonstrated expertise in social work practice, and are willing to share their experience with social workers in their pursuit of professional development. Participants are expected to uphold the principles and standards put forth by the NASW Code of Ethics. It is recommended, but not required, that mentors hold professional liability insurance. The parameters of the relationship are left up to the mentor and NASW-NJ member. Mentors are organized by practice area allowing members to search for mentors in their area of interest. Members will be able to search a database of mentors by practice area. Interested members will contact mentors directly to initiate the mentoring relationship.

NASW-NJ has redesigned the Mentoring program and made it easier to connect mentors and their proteges. If you would like to become a mentor or if you've been involved in our mentoring program in the past, please take a few minutes and fill out our new online application. CLICK HERE or go to: http://www.naswnj.org/displayemailforms.cfm?emailformnbr=104119. This form will capture important information for our new database which will allow NASW-NJ members looking for a mentor to quickly and easily search for the perfect match!
